TCR History Camp / Hoover History Skills Academy FAQ

FAQs

What is the Hoover History Skills Academy (HHSA)?

The HHSA is an intensive history research paper writing workshop for motivated high school students. The Concord Review, in collaboration with the Hoover Institution, is operating this event.

This is a unique offering, compared to the other TCR HC sessions, because HHSA participants gain access to the renowned Hoover Institution’s rich archives and learn principles of historical and archival research under the tutelage of Hoover historians and archivists, while also participating in the core TCR curriculum that teaches students how to build a solid outline for a serious research paper.

Who is this program for?

Motivated high school students (grades 9–12) who want to improve writing and research skills.

Where is the program held?

At the Stanford University campus at the Hoover Institution.

What is the daily schedule like?

A mix of writing seminars, research workshops, conferences with instructors, independent writing time, and occasional Hoover-related events.

After dinner on some evenings, TAs and RAs will coordinate non-academic social activities before lights-out.

Do students need prior research paper writing experience?

No, but students should be prepared for rigorous reading and writing.

What output is expected?

A narrowed research topic, a solid outline with clear ideas for thesis and conclusion paragraphs, and a timeline to submission.

What should students bring?

A packing list will be provided to admitted students in early spring.

Are meals provided?

Yes. Students have access to Stanford dining halls from dinner on arrival day to lunch on the final Friday.

Is housing provided?

All students stay in Stanford dormitories, typically with a roommate (double rooms).

How do parents communicate with staff?

Parents can contact the camp phone or email at any time. Emergency contact information is sent before camp begins.

What interaction do students have with the Hoover Institution?

Guest lectures by Hoover scholars, visits to the Hoover Library & Archives, a tour of Hoover Tower and the tower exhibits, plus an orientation tour of Stanford’s Green Library and the Rumsey Map Center, along with other special events.

Is financial aid or a scholarship available for HHSA?

The Concord Review is a small non-profit dedicated to publishing exceptional history papers by high school students. While we unfortunately do not have an official financial aid program at this time, we do our best to assist students with demonstrated need.

In past years, we’ve been able to support a limited number of students per session, especially those who receive free or reduced lunch at public schools or have partial aid from private schools. We try to match the level of support students are already receiving when possible.
