Class Description

TCR Summer Programs are intensive workshops in history, research, and writing that offer high school students an advisory structure to work on historical research projects on their own chosen topics.

Students arrive at the program with a preliminary research topic and spend the camp refining their focus, building a strong foundation in historical scholarship, and producing a detailed outline for a long-form research paper—a project that typically takes two to six months to complete after the camp ends.

They are given the opportunity to formulate productive research questions; find and use primary and secondary sources; take effective notes; examine model historical essays; pursue various analytical and narrative writing strategies; confront problems of structure and organization; and contemplate the larger philosophical dilemmas associated with studying the past. They also receive individualized guidance from instructors and have ample independent study time in the Boston Public Library—one of the nation’s premier research institutions.
